In search of something special
Some of the most memorable moments in my life have happened when I’ve been outside in nature, often walking. Suddenly you turn a corner and are filled with this overwhelming sense of intense wonder and awe at the intoxicating beauty that is there right in front of you. It’s almost something spiritual that embraces you in that moment as you realise that not many people will have seen what you have just witnessed today, that week or indeed ever.
I’ve been lucky. My work has taken me around the world and with each trip comes another moment of something special. Whether it the foothills of the Himalayas, across the Outback of Australia, gazing at the icebergs in the Southern Ocean or right here, closer to home on one of the countless miles of public footpath across the British Countryside. Sometimes it’s a huge sweeping landscape that opens out in front of me, sometimes it’s a sunrise or a sunset, sometimes its a flower or a tree. All of them are something special in their own right. This week our walk of the week has plenty of them.
In the footsteps of pilgrims
This week our walk will perhaps take a week to complete – it’s St Cuthbert’s Way, following in the footsteps of the pilgrims from Melrose in the Scottish Borders to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne off the Northumberland coast. The full trail is around 100km. If the full walk is too much for you – the final leg from Wooler to Holy Island isn’t to be missed!

Four Things For You
With much of the UK now experiencing drought conditions, it looks as though this long, hot summer may be with us for a little while yet. The reports of wildfires, both here and across Europe, have been deeply upsetting. Nature is extraordinarily resilient and, in time, the landscape will recover, but it is still heartbreaking to see the damage left behind and the impact on wildlife, communities and the people working tirelessly to keep everyone safe.
If you are planning to visit an affected area, please check the latest local advice before setting out, as footpaths and access routes may be closed. Give the emergency services the time and space they need to carry out their incredible work, remain vigilant, and report any signs of fire immediately.
